After School Advancement Program (ASAP) of BWM has been in operation for 13 consecutive years and provides after school tutoring, parent education, Christian values, culture and history.
ssistance with high school and college choices and preparation is also provided. The population served comes from the Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury, Hyde Park and Roslindale areas. P21 enrolls students from grades K – 8.
In September 2003 Project 21 established a partnership with a neighborhood school, the Pauline A. Shaw School to support the schools goals of increasing the literacy and math levels of students along with MCAS scores.
The Philosophy behind Project 21 is that each child is smart and capable in their own way. Our job as adults is to help them to discover the learning style that best suits them.
The question asked of each participant and their parents is How Are You Smart?-Not Are You Smart?
Project 21 continues to be supported through the Black Ministerial Alliance/Victory Generation Program. Field trips are also an important component to this program.
Last years trips included; the Museum of Science, Build a Bear, concerts and the Children’s Museum. This year Project 21 has included two additional and important features. A children’s choir has been formed and expects to perform in the community during the Christmas holiday time and Project 21 has introduced a Saturday Institute staffed by our AMERICORP volunteer to provide additional tutoring for those students who can benefit from a more concentrated time of study.
